'Distinguished American fiction': * Pulitzer Prize for Fiction

De Pulitzer Prize for Fiction is één van de zeven bekroningen (Fiction, Drama, History, Biography, Poetry, General Nonfiction, Music) in de categorie ‘Letters, Drama & Music’ van de Pulitzer Prizes. Zijn voorloper is de Pulitzer Prize for the Novel (1917-1947) die voor het eerst in 1918 werd uitgereikt, vanaf 1948 omgedoopt tot Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Sindsdien werden ook verhalenbundels geselecteerd.

Het is een bekroning voor fictie, verschenen in boekvorm gedurende het afgelopen jaar. Het werk gaat bij voorkeur over het Amerikaanse leven en is geschreven door een Amerikaanse auteur. De winnaar krijgt 15.000 dollar. Sinds 1980 worden bij de uitreiking ook de finalisten (doorgaans twee, soms drie, naast de laureaat) vermeld. Er wordt vooraf echter geen shortlist bekendgemaakt.

In totaal werd de Pulitzer Prize for Fiction & the Novel elf keer niet uitgereikt, de laatste keer in 2012. Mogelijk ook omdat de prijs nooit gedeeld wordt tussen twee auteurs. Slechts drie auteurs konden de bekroning tot tweemaal toe winnen: Booth Tarkington, William Faulkner en John Updike.

Alle Pulitzer-winnaars tot 1979 werden in de afgelopen veertig jaar vertaald. We moeten teruggaan tot 1978 voor een onvertaalde laureaat met James Alan McPhersons Elbow Room. Soms gaat er wel de nodige tijd overheen. Laureaten als Wallace Stegner (1972, Angle of Repose ) en Edna Ferber (1925, So Big ) werden pas is respectievelijk 2017 (De fundamenten van ons leven)  en 2016 (Het purperen land) vertaald.

In 2018 was het 100 jaar geleden dat de Pulitzer Prize for the Novel voor het eerst werd uitgereikt. Het voorbije decennium (2009-2018) werden de helft van de shortlists volledig vertaald. Van de overige finalisten zijn er 2 (2x) of 1 (3x) niet vertaald. Vooral in 2015 en 2016 liet de vertaalmachine het afweten. 2011-2013 en 2017-2020 waren veruit de beste jaren om een vertaling op de kop te tikken.

Met een nieuwe shortlist is het altijd even afwachten wat nog vertaald moet worden. Toeval speelt een grote rol omdat de finalisten pas na de uitreiking bekend gemaakt worden. Bij andere prijzen kan je met de longlist en shortlist toch een aantal maanden vooruit kijken om een vertaling in te plannen.

Opmerkelijk is dat de laureaat van 2020, Colson Whitehead met The Nickel Boys, voor de tweede keer bekroond werd met de Pulitzer Prize for Fiction na The Undergroud Railway in 2017. Daarmee bevindt hij zich in het selecte gezelschap van oude iconen uit de Amerikaanse literatuur als William Faulkner en John Updike.

Aangezien ook de vertalingen van de finalisten Ann Patchett (Het Hollandse huis (De Bezige Bij)) en Ben Lerner (Leerjaren in Topeka (Atlas/Contact)) reeds beschikbaar zijn, gaat het om de meest toegankelijke Pulitzer Prize shortlist voor fictie in jaren.

Dit in tegenstelling tot 2021, waar we intussen de vertaling van winnaar Louise Erdrich (The Night Watchman (De nachtwaker)) verwelkomen. Vertalingen van de andere finalisten, Daniel Mason (A Registry of My Passage Upon the Earth) en Percival Everett (Telephone), zullen nog een tijd op zich laten wachten...

Een gegeven dat tevens geldt voor de uitreiking van 2022. Begin 2023 werd laureaat Joshua Cohen vertaald bij Nijgh & Van Ditmar. Vertalingen van de andere finalisten (zie beneden) zijn nog niet aangekondigd.
